Something good is happening on the La Libertad coast. The government has announced a big upgrade to the Carretera del Litoral, the main road that runs along the coast toward El Zonte, and the work is ongoing. Here’s what we’re excited about, and what it could mean for how you live here.
What’s coming
The plan covers about 22 km of the coast road. According to the news, it includes:
- Four lanes, two in each direction
- Three new bridges
- A bike lane
- Sidewalks and pedestrian crossings
- New lighting, signs and drainage

A coast made for living outside
Picture it: a morning bike ride along the ocean, a walk to a café with a real sidewalk under your feet, a safer way for kids and families to get around. The bike lane and the sidewalks are the part we love most. They make the coast feel more like a place to enjoy every day, not just drive through.
Closer to everything
A wider, better-lit road means an easier drive between El Zonte, El Tunco, La Libertad and the airport, and a smoother trip to the city for shopping, doctors, restaurants and events. For people who live here part of the year, that connection is a big part of the lifestyle: beach days when you want them, and the city close when you need it.
While the work continues, give yourself a little extra time on the road and check before you head out. It’s worth it.
