We spend most of our year in El Salvador now, and people ask us the same question all the time: “Where on the coast should I look?” The honest answer is that it depends on how you want to live. Here’s a simple look at the beach towns of La Libertad, the stretch of coast many people now know as Surf City, from someone who’s actually here.

Why the coast?
Warm weather all year, black sand beaches, some of the best surf in Central America, and sunsets that never get old. Most of these towns are under an hour from the airport, so flying in and out from Canada or the US is easy. And every year there are more good restaurants, cafés and services, without losing that small-town feel.
The beach towns, in plain words
El Zonte
Relaxed and friendly, with a strong surf and expat community. Small hotels, cafés and yoga, and a slower pace. A good fit if you want to be close to the beach but away from the noise.

El Tunco and El Sunzal
El Tunco is the busiest beach town on this coast: restaurants, bars, music and lots of visitors, which also makes it popular for short-term rentals. El Sunzal, right next door, is known for its long, easy waves and a calmer feel.
La Libertad port
The town itself, with the pier, the fish market and the malecón by the sea. More local life, more services, and close to everything.
Further west
Past El Zonte, the coast gets quieter and greener, with cliffs, hidden beaches and more land. It’s where you’ll find bigger lots and more privacy, for people who want space and don’t mind a short drive for dinner.

What we tell our own family before they buy
- Visit first, and visit more than once. A town feels different on a Tuesday than on a holiday weekend.
- Think about how you’ll use the home. Living here, a few months a year, or renting it out? Each one points to a different town and a different kind of property.
- Check water, power and road access. Especially for land. Some of the most beautiful lots need the most work.
- Plan who will care for it when you’re away. Salt air, heat and rain are hard on a home. A home that’s cared for keeps its value.
- Work with people who have walked the property. Photos online don’t tell you everything.
